Music transcends time. It strikes a chord in people’s hearts both young and old. Music ignites our emotions – sadness, happiness, anger, tranquility... Music hides our memories within its melodies – our first kiss, seeing our favorite band with friends, moonlit summer nights, cold nights by the fire... Music moves our bodies. Whether you are a toe tapper, chair dancer, head bobber, or all limbs moving and grooving person, music reaches deep inside our souls.
Music has been around in some form or another since the beginning of time. It’s used in celebrations, funerals, in cars, in stores, in elevators, in homes, in movies and tv shows... In fact, music is so much a part of our lives that without it we feel something is off, something is missing. For example, have you ever watched a scary movie without sound? Without the pounding of the drums or the eerie sounds of the string instruments – not as scary (try it sometime). Or how about having a birthday party with no happy birthday song, or extended versions of the happy birthday song.
What emotions rise up in you while listening to the following sound clip?
Studies reveal that “Music is the most stimulating activity you can do for your brain. Nothing else gets as many parts of the brain working at the same time as playing or listening to music. Music is a multi-disciplinary activity in the brain. There is no one center for processing music. Instead, areas associated with sound, site, memory, motor skills, emotions, and decision-making all work together to interpret the stimuli coming from many parts of the body. In addition, music improves coordination and concentration, as well as, activating the emotional and reward centers of our brains.” – Try New Things
Here’s what my students are saying –
“Since taking lessons, I have been able to apply what I've learned to other songs” – Amanda
“Rather than starting with basic sheet music, she selects music my daughter likes and what she wants to play. The result is great enthusiasm and practicing without being asked.” – Stephanie
